Correspond au Dakkhiṇāvibhaṅga-sutta du Majjhimanikāya (Suttantapiṭaka). Selon lui, lorsque sa tante Mahāpajāpatī souhaite lui offrir une robe pour son usage personnel, le Buddha l'encourage à la proposer à l'ensemble du Saṅgha. Il poursuit en expliquant que le meilleur type d'offrande au Saṅgha est celui offert à la communauté des moines et des nonnes dirigée par le Buddha.
